Declaring Freedom

This weekend we celebrate Independence day. A celebration of the Declaration of Independence, adopted on July 4th, 1776.

But the vote for freedom actually took place on July 2nd, 2 days earlier.

If our founding fathers voted for freedom 2 days earlier, why are we not celebrating the 2nd of July instead?

July 4th is the day that the states unanimously adopted, or declared as their own, that freedom.

That was the day we moved from decision to action.

We recognized our NEED for freedom long before that day, we voted for it 2 days before, but we made ourselves free by adopting it, declaring it as our own, on July 4th.

On the 4th of July, we celebrate the DECLARATION that brought us freedom as a nation, bought with the high price of many lives.

We declared that we were set free from the burdens of injustice and persecution, regardless of the past.

The Declaration ends with this: “with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence” – in short – declaring independence while acknowledging dependence on God.

Jesus gives us the same opportunity. By giving His life for us all we are set free from death, guilt, shame and the sins of our past.

All you have to do is follow the same steps our forefathers took for their country to be free.

1. Recognize your need for freedom. Freedom from the burdens of sin, from addiction, from guilt and shame, from your past.

2. Make the decision to be set free, and then..

3. Take action – take for yourself the gift of freedom by making a declaration. Take the freedom He offers you and adopt it – make it your own, and acknowledge your dependence on Him to do so.

Declare Jesus as Lord and Savior in your life, and gain your independence by simply depending on Him.

Matthew 11:28-30

Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
