Matthew 9:9
As Jesus passed on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, “Follow Me.” So he arose and followed Him.
...
A great lesson in love and mercy for us all to follow.
Here Jesus sees Matthew the tax collector (considered one of the most vile professions) sitting in his tax office (considered a vile place) doing what was considered a vile thing (collecting taxes for the Romans).
The Pharisees and many of the people of that area saw just that - Jesus going to an unlovable person in a foul place doing a terrible thing.
What does Jesus do, though?
He doesn’t condemn or accuse or judge, He does what many would have thought unthinkable – He shows His love and mercy by simply saying “Follow Me.”
No rebuke, no judgement, no anger or hatred, just acceptance.
He meets you and I the same way.
He loves us even when we’re considered unlovable by others.
He meets us with love and mercy right where we are, just as we are and He says the same thing to us regardless of our past or even our present circumstance - “Follow Me.”
No questions asked.
No “Why are you doing this?”.
No “How could you be such a bad person?”
Just perfect love, mercy, and an open invitation follow Him and be set free.
Ours, free for the taking.
Respond like Matthew and just take it.
